Rediscovered Spanish Civil War negatives, at the International Center of Photography

September 24, 2010 – January 9, 2011

Truly a landmark exhibition, the first public showing of Spanish Civil War images by Magnum Photos co-founder Robert Capa, recovered under mysterious circumstances in 2007 after having disappeared from Capa’s Paris studio near the beginning of World War II.  The “suitcase” of 4,500 negatives from Mexico City also contained films by Capa colleagues and leading Spanish Civil War photographers David Seymour (known as Chim) and Gerda Taro. Collectively these daring and intensely committed photographers laid the foundation for modern photojournalism. The collection establishes the original context in which some of Capa’s iconic photographs were originally conceived and shot, and also provides many unpublished or never printed images unknown until now.
