I get tempted to book last minute flights when I come across hotels like these. Although only the beginning in a world of design hotels, they should provide some inspiration for planning your next trip.

Propeller Island City Lodge, Berlin, Germany

More of a museum than a hotel, the Propeller Island City Lodge in Berlin is the work of German artist Lars Stroschen. Room themes range from Upside Down, where the furnishings hang from the ceilings, to the Mirror room, which can only be equated with sleeping in a kaleidoscope.

Nordic Light Hotel, Stockholm, Sweden

Sun deprived in the winter and light-soaked in the summer, fashioning a hotel around the idea of light doesn’t seem so strange. The Nordic Light Hotel is just that, with rooms that are meant to infuse your soul with a breath of fresh air and your eyes with a relaxing light display left in your hands so you can chose your special lighting settings. Revamped last spring, the lobby is also a dream for any person drawn to a light show; Kai Pippo the renowned lighting architect, designed the room to function on a 24 hour mood schedule. Think yellows and oranges in the morning and blues in the afternoon.

Rogner Bad Blumau, Bad Blumau, Austria

This spa is much more than a weekend of massages and salt rubs. The colorful and playfully designed buildings are only the beginning. Organic forms create the mass complex, which houses the spa at the center, and features many underground rooms with windows facing lit courtyards. The designer, well known Friedensreich Hundertwasser has been compared to Antoni Gaudi, and he is known for so eloquently calling straight lines, “the devil’s tools,” making the spa an organic experience architecturally just as much as its beautiful Austrian location.

Residenza d’Arte, Torrita di Siena, Italy

Art and color naturally combine with the Tuscan background of cypress and olive trees in this old Italian villa. Paintings and sculptures are found throughout the premises giving the interior and exterior both a magical feel. Only a few kilometers from Siena, it is no surprise that art plays an integral role in the scenery and local culture. If the setting inspires you, Residenza d’Arte can even organize a painting class, tempting you to embrace your artistic spirit and extend your Tuscan stay.

Metropole Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa

A revamped Georgian townhouse, the Metropole combines old world grace with chic modern amenities. Boasting the city’s oldest functioning elevator, the hotel has taken on a design that uses urban design with a touch of retro 60’s.
