Pacific Northwest artists take note: Applications are now being accepted for the 2011 Betty Bowen Award, sponsored by the Seattle Art Museum.  Visual artists living Washington, Oregon or Idaho are encouraged to apply. There is a $10 application fee, and the submission deadline is August 1.

Work by 2010 Betty Bowen Award winner Ellen Lesperance

An award committee will name this year’s finalists in September, and the amount of the award will also be announced at that time.  Last year’s winner received an unrestricted cash grant of $15,000, and a showing at the Seattle Art Museum. Two other artists received special recognition awards of $2500.

The Betty Bowen Award is a great opportunity for emerging northwest artists to draw curatorial attention to their work.  Last year five finalists were selected from a pool of 350 applicants. The winner, Ellen Lesperance, was recognized for her gouache and graphite recreations of sweater patterns, taken from photographs of clothing worn by women activists engaged in protest demonstrations.

Applications for the 33rd annual Betty Bowen award are available www.callforentry.org. For more information visit the Seattle Art Museum.
